GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:

Under the administrative direction of Laboratory Leadership, is responsible for the coordination, leadership and development of assigned section, personnel and operations. Responsible for the technical supervision of laboratory personnel and maintenance of policies, procedures, and quality control practices within their respective sections. Assumes leadership responsibility for the laboratory in the Manager's absence.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred. Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or equivalent certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) required. Five years of experience as a Medical Technologist or Technician required; preferably some experience as a generalist, covering all departments within the lab.

Project management experience preferred. Good knowledge of all areas of the laboratory, including applicable clinical laboratory equipment. Good oral and written English communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills. Knowledge of computers including word processing, spread sheet, linearity. Must be able to use spreadsheets. Must be able to demonstrate excellent critical thinking skills. Possess in-depth knowledge of the equipment, methodology and applications of testing in areas of accountability.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Meets health system's Guiding Behaviors including interpersonal communication and professional conduct expectations. Prepares written documentation as required by regulatory agencies, the profession and the department. Collaborates with the Medical Director and department manager in research and development of new technology and methods to maintain state-of-the-art, cost-effective products and test menu. Computes laboratory costs in cooperation with Laboratory Manager; projects equipment needs.

Manages costs within assigned area of responsibility, meeting or exceeding budget targets. Manages materials and supplies within area of jurisdiction; has input into supply sourcing. Submits supply orders on time, maintains an appropriate amount of inventory; eliminates waste and unnecessary costs, such as over-night shipping. Monitors vendor invoices to assure accuracy. Has overall responsibility for proficiency testing surveys and does comparative analysis of work units; investigates new products, equipment, techniques, methodologies and introduces demonstrates effects and recommends as appropriate. Directs documentation, establishes record system, and maintains all laboratory records, reports, statistics, logs and files.

Implements initial training and ongoing proficiency testing of all personnel within area of jurisdiction. Assists staff in performing unusual or difficult tests and procedures. Keeps informed of all regulatory agency requirements within area of jurisdiction and assures total compliance and acceptable performance on inspections and surveys; implements corrective actions as necessary. Regulatory agencies include, but are not limited to FDA, TJC, CAP CLIA, OSHA, and the State of Idaho.

Assists with scheduling and covers bench work when/if needed. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. All laboratory employees actively participate in the Patient Satisfaction initiatives.
